President's Message

Hello everyone, and welcome back to what promises to be an awesome school year! My name is Gabriela Rosales, but people call me Gaby, and I am your elected Commerce Students’ Association (CSA) President for the 2010-2011 school year.  The Asper School of Business provides you, the students, with many opportunities to complement and enhance your classroom education.   I would like to put forward two strong reasons to get involved in the various programs Asper has to offer:

1.       It will benefit your career

Getting involved gives you great opportunities to network and test out different aspects of business. Personally, I have participated in the co-op program and got involved with multiple students groups and committees.  Each experience has been unique and I know that when I graduate this spring I will enter the workforce a confident businesswoman.

After deciding to apply to Asper and the initial excitement of acceptance, I realized that I was not nearly done with career decision-making.  It is one thing to know you want a business degree, but in what specifically? My experiences gained through student involvement complimented the knowledge I gained through class work to such an extent that I am confident I want to pursue marketing.  Marketing may not be for you, but that’s not the point.  Be it finance, accounting, human resources, supply chain management or any of the 13 majors Asper has to offer,  getting involved can help you explore the diversity of options available, enabling you to choose the best career path for you!

2.       You will have more fun.

The University of Manitoba, with its 20,000 students is a large place. Granted once you have entered the Asper School of Business the population is streamlined and you enter a smaller community.  However, the pitch I would like to throw you is that if you come to school and only go to class you will likely make a few new friends if you choose - working on projects or perhaps just someone you consistently sit beside.  But, if you get involved in student life by joining a committee or getting involved in any way you will gain multiple friends guaranteed! So how can you get involved?!? Continue reading through the pages in this handbook and you’ll read all about the various positions on CSA, the different student groups, the Co-op program, the International Exchange program all of which are constantly looking for people to get involved!

Whether you decide to take an active role or not, know that the moment you were accepted into the Asper School of Business you became a member of the Commerce Students’ Association.  I’m extremely excited to get to know all of you this year so please stop me in the halls, email me ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. I wish you all the best and good luck in all of your classes this year!!!
